Image selected to be shown at the VAS (Visual Arts Scotland)annual exhibition starting on Saturday the 4th of February until the 1st March 2012 at the RSA Upper Galleries, The Mound, Edinburgh. Image is from a road trip to Ireland taken on the Erriff River at the Erriff Bridge on the N59 in Co Mayo. The upper framed picture in the second image shows a digital version of the same image with the etching below.

Vitreography – Axis #5

The latest in the Axis Series which is also a new Vitreograph.
Made using four 12mm glass plates, they have been carved and cut using glass engraving and diamond cutting tools. Unfortunately the key plate broke after only four prints in proofing, so four it is!

Printed together to form the fourth in the series. Shown here alongside the other prints in the Axis Series – also multi plate drypoints.

Way Out West

An exhibition of recent prints and printmaking including the first complete showing of Way Out West (a portfolio) a body of work made after a sailing trip to the West of Scotland in 2010. The show has a series of around 25 Japanese woodblock prints alongwith other etchings and drypoints. Taking place in The Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar, Co Mayo during June 2011, the show starts on Friday June 3rd. For further information about opening times please contact The Linenhall. Japanese Woodblock Prints

Part of a new series of Japanese Woodblock Prints for my forthcoming Scampston exhibition later in the year. They are representations of the “Track and Barrow” markings found in the surrounding landscape. These are what are known as moku hanga prints, ‘Moku’ meaning wood and ‘Hanga’ meaning print.

Original Prints

An Original Print is the process of making an artwork by printing, normally onto paper. Printmaking normally covers only the process of creating prints with an element of originality, rather than just being a photographic or mechanical reproduction of a painting. Except in the case of a monotype, the process is capable of producing multiples of the same piece, which is called a ‘print’. Each piece produced is not a copy but considered an original since it is not a reproduction of another work of art and is technically (more correctly) known as an ‘impression’. Printmaking (other than monotyping) is not chosen only for its ability to produce multiple copies, but rather for the unique qualities that each of the printmaking processes lends to the finished print.

Prints are created from a single or multiple original surface, known technically as a matrix. Common types of matrices include: plates of metal, usually copper or zinc for engraving or etching; stone, used for lithography; blocks of wood for woodcuts, linoleum for linocuts and fabric plates for screen-printing. But there are many other kinds of matrix substrates and related processes.

Works printed from a single plate create an edition, in modern times usually each signed and numbered to form a limited edition. Prints may also be published in book form, as artist’s books. A single print could be the product of one or multiple techniques.

Once completed these limited edition prints should not be in any way confused with a reproduction, giclee or inkjet print of an artwork produced in another medium.

A4 Printmakers

The first Open International Contemporary Print Competition in South West
Cornwall.
Exhibition of prints from the competition at the Newlyn Art Gallery, Penzabce from 25th April to 7th May.

The aim of this project is to show the most innovative methods in Printmaking processes from all over the world, and to promote artists by encouraging new contacts, which we believe to be essential for personal development.

It is an opportunity to be part of a prestigious exhibition in Cornwall, and to encourage a better understanding of our work to friends and members of the wider public.

Traquair Fair 2010

Alongside Edinburgh Printmakers demonstrating printmaking at this years Traquair Fair. Held at Traquair House, Innerleithen in the Borders on the 31st July and 1st of August. This event was sponsored by Event Scotland and formed part of the new Visual Arts Area at the Fair. Some rain, some sun, lots of demonstartions of etching and screenprinting.
