Way Out West

An exhibition of recent prints and printmaking including the first complete showing of Way Out West (a portfolio) a body of work made after a sailing trip to the West of Scotland in 2010. The show has a series of around 25 Japanese woodblock prints alongwith other etchings and drypoints. Taking place in The Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar, Co Mayo during June 2011, the show starts on Friday June 3rd. For further information about opening times please contact The Linenhall. Japanese Woodblock Prints

Part of a new series of Japanese Woodblock Prints for my forthcoming Scampston exhibition later in the year. They are representations of the “Track and Barrow” markings found in the surrounding landscape. These are what are known as moku hanga prints, ‘Moku’ meaning wood and ‘Hanga’ meaning print.

Way Out West (a portfolio)

During May 2010 a sea trip was made to the West coast of Scotland. Travelling aboard Taraka a Dutch Rogger built in 1976 the trip took in the West coast of Skye and a brief visit to the outer Hebrides. Unusually for the time of year much of the voyage was plagued by thick fog which is reflected in this series of unique woodblock prints based on the experience. Thanks John.

Another set of Japanese water based woodblock prints – as previously, these are all unique prints rather than editions.

Japanese woodblock prints gained popularity in the 17th century & were made to be sold as cheap, affordable works of art to the man in the street. In Japan, woodblock printing was later used to illustrate popular books.

A series of small works recently undertaken using wood blocks and water based colours, printed on Japanese papers. These Japanese water based woodblock prints are made using a variety of hard and soft wood blocks giving a variety of grain effects.
