The first Open International Contemporary Print Competition in South West Cornwall.

The aim of this project is to show the most innovative methods in Printmaking processes from all over the world, and to promote artists by encouraging new contacts, which we believe to be essential for personal development.

It is an opportunity to be part of a prestigious exhibition in Cornwall, and to encourage a better understanding of our work to friends and members of the wider public.

Traquair Fair 2010

Alongside Edinburgh Printmakers demonstrating printmaking at this years Traquair Fair. Held at Traquair House, Innerleithen in the Borders on the 31st July and 1st of August. This event was sponsored by Event Scotland and formed part of the new Visual Arts Area at the Fair. Some rain, some sun, lots of demonstartions of etching and screenprinting.

New Circle III

Two new versions of the Circle III print series – first is a four print version called “Full Circle” – next a new plate shown as a multiple print called “Circle Quartered”. More to follow……..

New proof prints from “Netscape” a set of three 12mm glass plates – combination of sandblasting, cutting and engraving using a variety of masking processes.

Giclee

A machine made print of an image or artwork – usually from a digital source. Giclee comes from the French word meaning “to spray or to spurt”. A giclee print is not a hand made print. It tends to be associated with the reproduction of art works produced in another medium, such as painting.

Edition

A specified number of identical prints making up the edition made from the same plate or plates also utilising the same paper and ink combinations, usually marked on the print 1/1, 1/2, 1/3 etc.

Chine colle

Chine Colle is the process of applying thin paper to a print – this can be coloured or previously printed – it is often over printed with the image during printing.

Etching

The art of the ETCHER. The action of the ETCH.

A copy or print produced by etching the surface (of a metal plate) with acid to enable the incised plate to hold ink. A print is made from the metal plate normally onto dampened paper.

Original Print

An original print is produced when an artist creates a new image by working with one (or more) of the printmaking media. Unlike a reproduction, where an original painting is photographed and then mechanically printed en-mass resulting in what is essentially a poster, as per giclee print, not an original print.

Chopmark

An embossed logo or device which represents the artist and is used to authenticate the artists work.
From now on look for the “M” to represent my prints when in edition.

Watermark

A design or logo which is formed in a sheet of paper when it is being manufactured. It can be seen when the paper is held up to the light as an impression in the paper.

Monoprint

Monoprint or monotype – a one off image or unique print created using any of the various printmaking techniques.

Drypoint

Using a sharp pointed needle or similar tool to engrave (without acid) a metal plate. These engraved marks have edges or burrs which(when printed)give a drypoint print its characteristic velvety edges.

Way Out West (a portfolio)

During May a sea trip was made to the West coast of Scotland. Travelling aboard Taraka a Dutch Rogger built in 1976 the trip took in the West coast of Skye and a brief visit to the outer Hebrides. Unusually for the time of year much of the voyage was plagued by thick fog which is reflected in this initial series of unique woodblock prints based on the experience. Thanks John.

Woodblock Prints

Another set of Japanese water based woodblock prints – as previously, these are all unique prints rather than editions.

Japanese woodcuts gained popularity in the 17th century & were made to be sold as cheap, affordable works of art to the man in the street. In Japan, woodblock printing was later used to illustrate popular books.

A series of small works recently undertaken using wood blocks and water based colours, printed on Japanese papers. These colour woodblock prints are made using a variety of hard and soft wood blocks giving a variety of grain effects.
